2012 Apocalypse (Part 4): Population Growth & Global Disasters
06 November 2009

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7
As much as I would like to sound optimistic, it is clearly evident that the human population is not likely to increase steadily and remain sustainable forever. People do not support the use of nuclear power plants because of the dangers associated with it, but the global supply of fossil fuel, on the other hand, is rapidly decreasing while the demand for it is on the rise.
So what’s it going to be? Should people allow more nuclear power plants to be built and risk their health or should people continue to exhaust the supply of fossil fuel while increasing environmental pollution? That’s a very hard decision to make.
How about renewable energy, you may ask. I guess that’s probable because some major countries are using it now, but let’s face it, it’s far from meeting the rising demand for energy. The population growth will definitely bring problems in terms of depleting natural resources, but people will continue to use oil no matter how hard you advocate the use of renewable energy. This is not something you can change overnight unless you come up with a miracle.
Oh hey, we just talked about miracles earlier. Who knows, we might actually get one that will solve the energy crisis, yes? I’m placing my bet on nanotech. Let’s just hope that our geek friends can find a way to develop the technology faster and that gluttonous politicians and capitalists can provide more budgets for research. *wink*
If you want to understand the depth of our situation, I suggest that you watch these videos on how to analyze the population increase by using the exponential function. It actually has 8 parts, but I just listed here the first two since it contains the gist of the whole lecture.
Will There Be Global Catastrophic Events?
“The story is still unfolding, but the dramatic changes at the margins are quite striking. I expect increased ice-sheet discharge to continue, with the result being further acceleration in sea-level rise.” – Robert Bindschadler
In terms of extinction level events, I’m sure that there is enough literature out there to sink an ocean liner, so I’ll just give a brief statement regarding my opinion.
When talking about extinction, we can’t take catastrophic events out of the picture. Something that takes away an enormous population of life on the planet must be absolutely and necessarily extreme, devastating, and disastrous. However, I’m really not sure if the events that are happening all around the world are just the result of Earth undergoing its own cycle of generation and degeneration or if it’s the result of our collective consciousness expecting something to happen.
Global warming, earthquakes, super typhoons, asteroids colliding with our planet, war, famine, etc. We all see this everywhere and we all can picture this in our minds. Our technology is allowing us more and more to think the same way. What we think is what manifests in reality. Thought precedes matter. The thought of extinction is embedded deep in the human psyche. We have carried the thought inside our minds for a very long time. The earliest civilizations had it and it was then carried along by every generation that emerged from those civilizations. Why do we have so many prophecies about the end of the world? Don’t you notice that almost every major civilization that existed on our planet has its own thing to say about the origins and the ultimate destiny of humanity? If you're willing to wait for science to prove this, then be my guest.
The only thing that was lacking was our ability to visualize it. Today, however, our ability to envision our end is magnified by cinematography. I think I was compelled to write this because I’m quite certain that the movie 2012 will create another shift in our paradigms or maybe even worse. Many people do take things literally no matter how hard you try to educate people in our society. You can never tell what kind of impact that movie will have on human consciousness, so just be prepared.
