Your Life Is A Virtual Simulation

buddha mind enlightenment personal development“For it is a land of illusion, a place in the mind, a shimmering mirage of riches and mystery and death. These illusions have distorted its landscape and contorted its history.” - Richard E. Lingenfelter

My former boss thought there was something wrong with me. He told me how he often noticed that my mind enters La-La land whenever we had our meetings. I’m not sure why because during discussions, I really tried my best to pretend I was paying attention. I’m probably not that good at pretending. Just imagine how hard it is to keep a straight face when you’re saying, “That’s absolutely right! What’s the question again?”

In my moments of silence, I often ask the question, “Am I living in a dream world?” Why do I always find myself in situations that I never even planned to put myself in? Something always feels wrong. There is that sense of being locked up inside an invisible prison. No matter how hard you try to break away from it, you can't find any escape path because you can’t even see it.

I guess I’m just living inside a computer simulation. If this is true, then what’s the difference between virtual reality and the real world? How will I know if I'm real or not?

A virtual reality is a computer-simulated environment that is interactive. You can do whatever you want inside a virtual environment. You can pretend to be anyone, and you can also create almost anything. The things inside a virtual environment are not real, however, because you know it’s just computer software, right? But what if somebody tells you we already live in a kind of virtual reality, how will you respond to that?

Some people, most particularly the Hindus, believe that our world is an illusion. They call this Maya in Sanskrit. This illusion, similar to a computer program that generates a virtual environment, covers the real world and prevents us from seeing it. If you are able to grasp this concept, you will realize that everything that exists around you, including your own body, may not be real at all.

You can compare our world to the artificial world just like in the picture you see above. The people you see inside a virtual game like Sims are just images on the screen. Thus, those people are not real. What you don’t realize is that a player (someone from outside that virtual reality) is controlling the person inside the game. Could the situation be the same for all of us? Is your actual self controlling you from outside this world? Is your mind separate from your body?

Take a look at the picture above. Imagine for a moment that one of the many people in the picture is you. You’re inside the airport and you’re waiting in line to check-in/out. Are you done? Ok, turn your attention back to yourself (the one who is looking at the picture). Feel what’s going on around you and look at the things surrounding you. Are you done? Good! Now, imagine that there is someone else who is looking down at you while you’re reading this article just like how you looked at the small people in the picture above.

That’s it. We’re done. Snap out of it. If you felt something weird after following my instructions, you just experienced what I’m trying to say. Would you like to meet my former boss?

I think many of us have had similar experiences wondering if we are in a virtual reality.
With the world being so hard to understand on a logical level I have jokingly wondered if we are really a 'reality' TV show for another dimension.
Each time the show gets boring they add a new twist, gunpowder, LSD, etc to see what we do with it. :)

Great job.

Wow, that's a good one. I never thought of it that way, but what you said makes perfect sense. I'm just wondering, if a TV show has producers, directors, etc. who are working behind the scenes, how many puppet masters are there pulling our strings from behind this world? I guess we won't really get to know that until we try to follow the path to enlightenment. Unfortunately, that's difficult to do if we have this kind of society. I just hope everything changes soon. =)

Ryhen,

What a fantastic website site you have created and each post is more inviting to read that the next. Bookmarking such a website is a must for those of us with "like" thought processes. I will visit often, thank you for creating this informative and interesting site.

I always thought we were trapped in a real world where everything was supposed to make sense, until I had a NDE. Now I know we live in the virtual word of our own minds... the something else beyond that is too great for words.

Thanks guys. My mind had always been in a state of flux, but right now, it has managed to remain static in a perverse condition that I can only describe as frantic disruption. However, I celebrate the fact that I've attracted like minded individuals like you who share the same curiosity that's inside me. I'll use your energy for the meantime to create another post. I truly appreciate your presence.

I can do no more than refer you to my poem on Nomorepencils that explains it all.

You want to click Englightened Souls for the link.

Ouch! If our current life is just a virtual simulation, so what is the REAL 'real life' then?

I often feel the same way, a sense of unreality about some things we do.

I often wonder where life has taken us all and creation of the world. The reality of life automation whether we are robots in natural life. I have read some of Bhudda's analogy and believe quite a great deal of his work, to be true to life

Frantic disruption is of the monkey mind... meditation will get you past that state of flux... you are already perfect as you!

@ halfey - nobody can answer that question for you. you have to find it for yourself. if you're interested, however, in hindu philosophy, you can check out the Bhagavad Ghita. it may give you some clue.

@ quillcards - thanks for the poem

@ Sean - right on!

@ Barb - I recommend the video "Technocalyps" if you haven't seen it yet. It's a three part movie that you can watch on Google videos. It's quite long but worth the hassle.

@ Wendilea - thanks. monkey mind sounds cool. maybe i can develop some sort of theory about that. I'm thinking about something long and yellow. Can you penetrate my mind and read my thoughts? =)

The real illusion is the thought that this is all illusion. Don't think; listen to the rain. Look around.

Are you still in the state of the 'monkey-mind'? If you are, I might just want to snap you out of it by placing a real monkey in front of you.

Haha.

Again, your post got me into deep thoughts about our existence. It is always the human natura to drift and wonder. It is even easier to drift off to la-la-la land while you are in a brain-numbing meeting session.

The last part was funny, While you were off thinking about the mysteries of the universe, your boss was staring at you thinking about how he was going to kick your arse. :D

Respect! :D
